PMP Renewal - PDU Categories
The PMI - PMP certification has to be renewed on every 3 years.
To renew the PMP, everyone has to earn 60 PDUs on each three years. ( PDU is Professional Development Unit). These 60 PDUs need to be earned under some classification guided by PMI.
Mainly this is classified into two categories.
First one is Education and second one is Giving Back.
1. Education:
a. Technical
b. Leadership
c. Strategic & Business
2. Giving Back:
a. Work as a Practitioner
b. Other Giving Back
1. Under education every one has to earn minimum 35 PDUs.
These 35 PDUs under education should fall under the below classification.
a. Technical - In Technical, minimum 8 PDUs should be earned.
b. Leadership - In Leadership, minimum 8 PDUs should be earned.
c. Strategic & Business - In Strategic & Business, minimum 8 PDUs should be earned.
2. Under Giving Back every one can earn maximum of 25 PDUs.
a. Work as a Practitioner : If we are already
playing the project management job, we are entitled to earn maximum of 8 PDUs
under this.
b. Create content : Creating Blogs, Writing Books,
articles and PMI will approve it.
c. Give a presentation : Providing presentation in PMI
chapters or seminars or conference or present to your colleagues.
d. Share Knowledge : Sharing Project management knowledge and experience with colleagues or mentoring junior project managers
e. Volunteer : Participating in PMI volunteering
activities.
In Education, one can upskill ourselves by attending any one of the following:
1. Course or Training (In person or virtual classes, formal education)
2. Organization Meetings (Chapter, company, or professional meetings) Maximum 2 PDUs allowed.
3.Online or Digital Media ( Pre-recorded webinars, Podcasts, digital recordings)
4. Reading (Books, articles, blogs)
5. Informal learnings ( Structured discussions with other professionals or mentors).
PMI has introduced these categories after 2016 and insist everyone has to earn minimum or maximum PDUs as per the guidance.
